- Greetings from Boston! Today we are with Dr. Aric Parnes, who is Instructor at Harvard Medical School and Staff Hematologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, also in Boston. Dr. Parnes received his MD from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He did his residency in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. He did fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Yale New Haven Medical Center in Connecticut. He did another fellowship in Hematology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Clinical and research interests of Dr. Parnes are in non-malignant hematology, specifically, in hemophilia, anemias, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloproliferative disease, and in thrombosis - formation of blood clots in many diseases and pathologic states in the body. - Thank you. Let's start with definitions. What medical problems fall into the field of non-malignant hematology? Hematology deals with problems with bleeding and problems with clotting. We deal with problems of abnormal blood count. White blood cell count, red blood cell count could be high or low, platelets could be high or low. What are examples of diseases that hematologist treats? The most common benign hematological disorder is anemia. Anemia is very frequent. It happens worldwide. Anemia can affect anyone. We see anemia every day. Anemia has many different causes, for example, nutritional deficiencies, like iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, folic acid deficiency, or inflammatory conditions. Kidney dysfunction and bone marrow diseases also cause anemia.
