- Hematology oncology is a very complex field. It sits at the crossing of many medical and surgical specialties. Where do you see the field of hematology going in the next 10 years? What advances in diagnostics and treatments in hematology will be available to patients in the future? Medicine in general has been a very exciting field to be in. Hematology is one of the founding specialties of genomics explosion. It is exciting to see how hematology is changing. And hematology is changing so quickly. For example, in myelodysplastic syndrome, we had very limited understanding of its pathophysiology before. Now we have understanding of MDS at a molecular level, and how it affects patients, and what we can change about it. So this is going to happen in all fields of medicine. But it is happening right now in hematology. Where do you see the most exciting future directions in hematology? Certainly genomics is a big factor in hematology, because genetic changes are a root cause of many hematologic diseases. I am hopeful that gene therapy will be a big player in hematology soon - It hasn't yet! There were problems with gene therapy - finding the right vector to get therapeutic gene into the body in the right way, making sure the gene inserts in the right space in a patient's genome, so that it does not cause leukemia as a side effect. It has been a challenge. There are ongoing clinical trials in gene therapy. We are actually hoping to be part of a gene therapy clinical trial soon. But I think gene therapy has a long way to go.
