- This brings us to a very important question: How does one choose a medical specialist? How does one choose a surgeon? There is an increasing amount of clinical outcomes data for individual surgeons available in the US. Other countries perhaps do not have similar data transparency about clinical outcomes. But oftentimes the method of presentation of results of the surgery and availability of these data does not help patients, but confuses them even more. How does one choose a cardiac surgeon? Well, I think a lot of this is by referring doctors and cardiologists. It's not only about the intrinsic risk of the operation, but also, how experienced that surgeon is in doing the procedure which you have to have. Particularly with mitral valve repair, for example, surgeon needs to have done many operations to become good at it. If a patient is referred by a cardiologist to a new surgeon who has done only 5 of these operations in his life - that is a problem! But if you are sent to a surgeon who has done 500 of these operations, then you have a better chance to have correct operation done. A lot of doctors know each other's records [surgery results]. On the other hand, there are databases that are being generated around our country. They will have clinical outcomes data for surgeons and hospitals eventually.
